This course is designed to help students transition from school to career by focusing on essential career preparation skills. Students will develop personal statements, resumes, and cover letters, practice interviewing skills, and explore career and college pathways. By the end of the course, students will have a portfolio of career documents and the confidence to pursue their next steps after high school.
Lesson 1: Personal Statements, Part 1 - Brainstorming Ideas – Generating ideas for personal statements and outlining future goals.
Lesson 2: Personal Statements, Part 2 - Outlines – Structuring personal statements with clear goals and qualifications.
Lesson 3: Personal Statements, Part 3 – Rough Drafts – Developing rough drafts of personal statements.
Lesson 4: Personal Statements, Part 4 - Editing and Revisions – Peer editing and revising drafts for clarity and impact.
Lesson 5: Writing Resumes, Part 1 – Introduction to resume writing and key components of an effective resume.
Lesson 6: Writing Resumes, Part 2 – Resume formatting and critiquing sample resumes.
Lesson 7: Writing Resumes, Part 3 – Writing and peer-reviewing draft resumes; understanding job-seeking in a recession.
Lesson 8: Writing Cover Letters, Part 1 (Quiz at the End of Class) – Introduction to cover letters and their importance in job applications.
